Ball Screws and Anti Backlash conectors

When I first started this project over 10 years ago, ball screws were very expensive, so the only option was to make our own ant-backlash couplers to save cost.

Since then, many new suppliers have emerged. Due to demand, new simple cheap pre-built anti backlash connectors are readily available.

The top photograph, show some of the original Thompson Sigor nuts which have been modified, and shows the anti-backlash connector described in CNC Home Technologies web site ( Plans available, see acknowledgment projects section)

The bottom photograph shows some of the new prebuilt anti-backlash nuts.

In essence both of these designs , use two nuts with a spacer between them and sometimes incorporate a spring to reduce backlash.

In the design opposite (Top Photo) the first nut still retains it screw thread , which screws directly into the bearing block. The second nut has this removed, to accommodate the anti-backlash spacer device.

Other designs are available. You may like to design your own.

The advantage of the new prebuilt types are, they are very compact and take a lot of beating, if space is tight. I had to mill out a small slot (few mill deep) in my table to accommodate the square type nuts.
